The Bowflex Xtreme XTLU is the top-end of the Xtreme range of Bowflex products at $1199. The Xtreme XTLU has 65+ exercises.
The difference between the two Bowflex Xtreme models is that the XTLU has a leg attachment, which the XLU does not. If you are planning to train at home because of limited acvcess to the outdoors, you may as well spend a few extra dollars and get the XTLU which will let you do calves, quads, glutes and hamstrings.
Both come with 210lbs of resistance and are upgradable to 310 lbs or 410 lbs. If you are serious about weight training and are in good shape, get the upgrade soon. It is good to have a goal to work toward. If you are not very physically strong, this will not be necessary.
The Bowflex Xtreme is great for two different aspects of physical training : Strength Training and Circuit Training. The former allows you to to build and sculpt muscles and add bulk (aka pumping iron), the latter is used to tone muscles, get conditioned, burn fat and lose weight.
Bowflex offers what they call 'gym quality' exercises - as good or better than the machines you may use in a health club. I do not fully agree with this assesment, as I have access to some of the best clubs ion the state. But, for the above average health concious professional, this is a decent assessment.
All Bowflex models fold up and easily fit in your bedroom or living room.
Bowflex Gyms all work on the same rod-and-pulley principle. The thicker the rod, the harder it is to bend and therefore the more resistance it offers. It is easy to monitor performance and add a little more resistance each week.
If you are the type of person who likes to work out at home and has some garage space in which to set up, this system is great for you. If you live in a cold part of the country, you may prefer a morning workout in the comfort of your own home. The cost of this home gym will soon be offset by savings on gasoline and gym membership fees.
I became aware of the Bowflex Home Gyms when visiting a friend several years ago - he is built and muscular and claimed never to go to the gym. His Bowflex was folded up in hissmall bedroom. i am amazed at the versatility of this very smart system. Personally, I prefer going to the gym and getting inspired by the people around me. If I were more of a homebody, I'd get a Bowflex XTLU right away.
